Qi Wen, the girl boss behind Qwerky Colour first dyed her hair when she graduated from college at 18 years old. Being born and raised in Singapore, her school's never allowed her to have coloured hair until after graduation. Having coloured hair is like the forbidden fruit for the longest time, and once she had a taste of it, she knew that it was meant to be. Today, her friends and strangers know her as the girl with colourful hair. Let's have a chat with Qi Wen to learn more about why she started this company.
Why do you like to colour your hair so much?
I am a big fan of colours and I like experimenting with colours through fashion and makeup, so adding colour to my hair seemed like a natural next step. I love that changing up my hair colour makes me feel like a completely different person and allows me to express myself better in more than just words. I have never been able to stick to just one style of fashion or makeup because of how much I like playing around with different looks. After a while, having colourful hair just became part of my identity, and I never looked back.
Why did you start Qwerky Colour?
I started Qwerky Colour for the adventurous souls who like me, enjoy experimenting with hair colour but still want to maintain the integrity of their hair. I treat my hair like my baby, and I really put in the effort to make sure that it remains a healthy condition even after bleaching my hair multiple times and applying heat to it constantly. Also, since I started dying my hair when I just graduated from college I had a limited budget but still wanted to look good. Salons in Singapore are really expensive and I didn’t have the means to maintain my coloured hair by going to salons. So I started off my journey by using semi-permanent hair dyes but I just couldn’t find the perfect one. Some dried out my hair after use, had an unbearable smell, were not long-lasting, and were actually quite expensive when I did the math. I might as well have gone to a salon to get my hair done. So I decided to create this brand to bring affordable, non-damaging, long-lasting hair dye in trendy shades to the masses.
How did you come up with the name Qwerky Colour?
The first two letters of Qwerky are the initials for my name, Qi Wen (QW). And the word “Qwerky” was how I used to spell “Quirky” as a kid, so i thought combining the 2 together would make a funny yet meaningful brand name. I also wanted the essence of Qwerky Colour to be fun and spirited, I feel that people shouldn’t take themselves too seriously, and I want our hair dye to help people unlock their personalities and feel comfortable in their own skin.
Lastly, what’s next for Qwerky Colour?
You can look forward to more colours of hair dye, possibly other product ranges such as coloured shampoo, bleach, accessories, and more. I hope that Qwerky Colour can become the go-to brand for affordable hair products for people all around the world. With that said, I’m excited to see what the future has in store for Qwerky Colour.
