Milk tea brown is having a moment — and it's not hard to see why. The colour sits in that sweet spot between your natural roots and a salon result, like your hair just decided to be a slightly better version of itself. Soft, ashy, effortlessly cool... the kind of colour that looks expensive without screaming "I just dyed my hair."
The good news: you can get this look at home with Qwerky, without a salon appointment. The slightly more nuanced news: your starting hair level matters, and which shade you go for changes depending on where you're starting from. Here's the full breakdown.
What Is Milk Tea Brown, Actually?
"Milk tea brown" isn't one single colour — it's an aesthetic. At its core, it means a soft, natural-looking brown with a cool, ashy undertone: the kind that blends into your roots and looks like it could almost be your real hair on a good day. Some versions lean more grey, some lean softer and creamier — but the common thread is that it's understated, cool-toned, and doesn't look obviously dyed.
The two Qwerky shades that live in this space are Smoke and Teddy — each landing at a slightly different point on the milk tea spectrum, and each performing best at a specific hair level.
Your Hair Level Is the Starting Point
Before picking a shade, you need to know your current hair level — because Qwerky dyes deposit on top of what's already there, without lifting or lightening your base. The lighter your starting point, the more clearly the colour shows up.
For milk tea brown, the range you're working in is level 6 to 8 (medium brown to blonde). Both Smoke and Teddy need at least a level 6 base to deposit properly — on darker hair, the underlying colour is too deep for the ash tones to come through. If you're starting from black or dark brown hair, a single round of lightening to level 6 is enough to open this up, and you don't need to push any further than level 8.
Level 6–7 Hair: Start with Smoke
If your hair is at medium brown — level 6 or 7 — Smoke is the shade to reach for first. At this level, Smoke tones the hair into a cool ash brown, giving you that muted, grey-leaning milk tea result. It's soft, wearable, and sits naturally without looking harsh.
Teddy also works at level 6, but Smoke tends to read more cleanly as milk tea at this level — the cooler tone comes through better when there's still some warmth in the base hair for it to balance against.
If you want to warm things up slightly — a slightly creamier, less grey milk tea — adding a touch of Hey Tiger into your Smoke will do exactly that. Keep it a small amount — a little goes a long way towards shifting it from cool-ash to warm-ash.
Level 8 Hair: Switch to Teddy
At blonde — level 8 — Teddy takes over as the recommendation. On a level 8 base, Teddy deposits as a beautiful ash brown: creamy, soft, and natural-looking, right in the heart of the milk tea aesthetic. This is the level where Teddy performs at its full best.
Smoke at level 8 and above can start to look a little different — the lighter base means the grey comes through more starkly, which can veer away from milk tea into something more overtly grey. For the classic milk tea look at this level, Teddy is your shade.
Same note applies: if you want a touch more warmth in the result, mixing in a small amount of Hey Tiger will nudge it in a creamier, warmer direction without pulling it fully copper.
Do You Need to Bleach First?
If your hair is already at level 6 or above, you can jump straight to Smoke or Teddy without any lifting. If you're starting from dark brown or black hair, you'll need to lighten to at least level 6 before these shades will show up.
The target is somewhere between level 6 and 8 — you don't need to go platinum. One round of lightening to a medium brown is enough to unlock both Smoke and Teddy, and it's a manageable process at home. Our Butter Bleach is formulated to be gentler than most box bleaches — follow it with the Suck It Up Colour Locking Hair Mask to restore moisture and keep your hair in good condition through the process.
What Happens After Your Brown Fades?
One of the best things about starting your Qwerky journey with Smoke or Teddy is what it opens up next. Once you're at level 6 to 8, you've unlocked far more than just the brown shades — Bruise (ash blue), 12AM (deep navy), and more are all available to you at this base level.
As your milk tea colour fades naturally, your hair stays at the same level — ready to try something bolder without any additional lifting. Consider it the starting point: get your brown, let it fade, then decide what comes next. The level work is already done.
