Frequently asked questions

Will the colour show up on my hair?

It depends on your starting shade. Our semi-permanent dyes deposit colour but don't lighten your hair, so the same shade looks darker on darker hair and most vibrant on pre-lightened hair. Check the chart above to see how each shade looks on your hair level.

For a vibrant, true-to-colour result, or a pastel or ash tone, lighten your hair first with Butter Bleach. On black or very dark brown hair, try our No-Bleach Lifting Colour, which lightens and colours in one step.

How much dye do I need?

Pixie or men's cut: 100ml
Shoulder length: 200ml
Mid back: 2 × 200ml
Waist: 3 × 200ml

Get an extra 200ml for thick or curly hair. Opened tubs can be kept for future touch-ups.

Will this damage my hair?

No. Our semi-permanent dyes contain no alcohol, ammonia, peroxide or PPD. They're basically a hair mask with colour pigments, so they condition your hair while they colour it.

What do I need to dye my hair?

Your chosen shade, a pair of plastic or nitrile gloves, an old shirt, newspaper or plastic bags to protect your floor and countertop, and alligator clips or rubber bands. A hair dye brush is optional.

How do I use it?

Shampoo and fully dry your hair, with no conditioner, so the dye can grip. Do a test strand first to check the colour. Section your hair into 4 or more parts and apply in small sections for even coverage.

Leave it on for 30-60 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Skip shampoo on this first rinse for longer-lasting colour (if you have a sensitive scalp, shampoo it off), and don't wash your hair for the next 24 hours.

How long does the colour last?

Around 1-3 months. To keep it vibrant for longer, use Suck It Up Colour Locking Hair Mask 2-4 times a week and rinse with cold water.

Can I make a shade lighter or darker?

Yes. Mix any shade with Suck It Up Colour Locking Hair Mask to dilute it into a pastel, or add Blackforest to darken it.

Will it stain my skin, towels or pillowcase?

The colour may bleed on wet hair, so use a dark towel and dry your hair after showering. The bleeding stops after around 2 weeks. It can stain skin for a while: nail polish remover or soap and water usually lifts it, and baby oil or makeup remover works on stubborn spots. Wear gloves when applying.

How do I remove the colour if I don't like it?

It's semi-permanent, so it fades a little with every wash. To fade it faster, wash more often with a clarifying shampoo and hot water, and skip conditioner for the first few washes.

Can I dye over box dye or salon colour?

Yes, but expect the result to blend with the colour underneath rather than look exactly like the tub. If your hair is very dark from previous colour, you may need to bleach first.
